The Elm Vale Cottage sheep herd varies in numbers throughout the year. Our principle is to not have baby lambs frolicking in the fields as we are very soft and probably could not send them to slaughter. For this reason we keep small Highland breeds and acquire them when they are already  twelve months old. These sheep are fattened up for their final 6-9 months on  our grass.

Our chief sheep herd and “spy in the camp” is Norman.   Norman was brought to us as a two day old frolicking lamb and quite obviously having spent his first 4 weeks drinking milk from a bottle in Steve’s lap and living in the house (watching Nature Watch was his favourite) we would find it impossible to now be without him.   As he was brought up with our four dogs he now thinks he is a dog and loves to come for walks in our woods with us.

Lulu - She’s been in the sun and gone brown!

This year we were brought a friend for Norman in the form of Lulu, our other rejected lamb. Lulu is a Wensleydale/Shetland cross.
